Nothing will ever replace having an amazing client experience in your business and the word of mouth referrals it will bring your way. However, improving your website’s SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a great compliment to an overall marketing plan. Implementing a basic SEO plan in your wedding business is quite simple, but could have a huge impact when it comes to potential clients finding your photography business!
Watch this video below for Basic SEO Tips for Photographers:
SEO Tip #1 | Install the Yoast SEO Plug-In
If you’re on WordPress (which I highly recommend for the functionality and availability of all their plug-ins) install the Yoast SEO Plug-In. After the plug-in is installed, it will appear beneath the blog post when you’re writing in the editor mode.
SEO Tip #2 | Create Keywords Your Client is Searching For
When a bride looking for a wedding photographer opens up Google, what does she search? “Sarah and Brandon’s wedding?” No. “Robert H Lee Alumni Centre Wedding Photos,” because that’s her venue! And what will appear? This blog post.
Create keywords for your blog posts your client is actually looking for— think strategically about this. For wedding photographers, most of the time it’s as simple as including the venue name with the word ‘wedding photos’ at the end.
After you’ve created the keyword using the Yoast Plug-In, you want to make sure the blog post title and the permalink also matches the keyword.
SEO Tip #3 | Re-Name Your Images With the Keyword
Within the keyword-specific blog post, you also want to be renaming your images with SEO-friendly titles! My images are not called “SarahandBrandon.jpg” instead they’re listed as “RobertHLeeAlumniCentreWeddingPhotos01.jpg”
Renaming your images takes one click of the button with a program like PhotoMechanic. (New to PhotoMechanic? My free training videos will show you how.)
By naming our photos with the specific venue’s name (or other relevant keyword) provides Google another opportunity to bring up our photography to a client who may be searching for the specific venue.
SEO Tip #4 | Include the Keyword Throughout the Blog Post
Repetition is the name of the game when it comes to SEO. You’ll also want to include your keyword throughout the post and bonus points if they are outbound links. Work the venue name or keyword into your post however you can. For example, “I love the chance to photograph weddings at Robert H Lee Alumni Centre!” while linking to the venue site. However, it’s important for your links to flow naturally. Google is smart. Don’t copy and paste for the sake of repetition — it must be helpful.
SEO Tip #5 | Include Quality Links In Your Post
An easy way to include links as wedding photographers is with a list of vendors involved. A slew of outbound links show Google your website is quality because it’s focused on directing traffic to other quality websites.
You’ll also want to include inbound links (links to other pages of your own domain, ie. blog posts they may find relevant.) Something I could say in a post would be, “If you want to see another wedding photographed at the Robert H Lee Alumni Centre, you can visit Jamie and Jason’s wedding blog post right here.”
SEO Tip #6 | Include Alt Tags in Your Images
Essentially “alt” tags describe images to Google. Google relies on data we build into our posts to provide quality search results. In WordPress, if you click the edit button on an image you’ll see the alt text under “alternate text.”
I like to repeat the name of the venue (my focus keyword) with all images. Of course, adding alt text to 80 images one by one by using this edit tool would take a long time. Instead, I copy and paste the HTML version of my blog post into a simple text-editor. I search and replace:
Replace: alt=“keyword goes here”
